Sharp rise in bankruptcies in 2025

Neuchâtel, 21.05.2026 — In 2025, 12 485 bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against companies, a 61.2% increase on the previous year. This may be due to a change in legislation, which now permits bankruptcy proceedings to be initiated for the recovery of claims under public law. The increase in losses from unpaid debt certificates resulting from bankruptcy proceedings was more moderate (+17.8%), as was the change in the number of bankruptcy cases closed (+10.2%). These are some of the findings of the Debt Collection and Bankruptcy Statistics published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
