AI meets Earth Observation – Workshop at Kantonsschule Wetzikon

At the end of May 2026, the scientific NPOC had the opportunity to conduct a double lesson as part of a German-Geography block course at Kantonsschule Wetzikon. The course focused on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) and was aimed at students in the 2nd year of the long-term Gymnasium programme (8th school year).

At the beginning of the workshop, the students received an introduction to the world of satellite data. Using the “Your Name in Landsat” application and the Copernicus Browser, they gained their first experiences with satellite images and discovered what the Earth can look like when viewed from space.

The workshop then explored the connection between AI and Earth observation. The students learned how algorithms can identify patterns in satellite images and which diverse applications this enables. Examples include the detection of plastic waste accumulations in the ocean, the identification of deforested areas in rainforests, and the mapping of collapsed or burned buildings after natural disasters.

In addition to the opportunities offered by AI, its impacts were also discussed. The workshop highlighted that artificial intelligence requires resources – for example through energy and water consumption as well as the land required for infrastructure – and that technological developments also have social and environmental consequences. Despite all its possibilities, one point remains essential: our own thinking and critical reflection should not be taken over by a computer.

The scientific NPOC is happy to offer workshops on satellite data, Earth observation, and related topics such as AI. Teachers are welcome to contact the NPOC with their own topic suggestions. Together, a suitable and age-appropriate workshop can be developed.
